Fall 11 Dumplings Playgroup Recap and Reflections

This past Fall ’11 Semester, We havesuccessfully piloted our Dumplings Playgroup for adopted Chinese children andtheir families from the Greater Boston area to educate the children to theirChinese culture while giving their families a chance to connect and network.BUCCF is so glad to have fostered a collaborative playgroup with MIT China Careand our club is so grateful to have the support of the Boston ChinatownNeighborhood Center, China Care Foundation and Harvard China Care to ensuringour program’s success!

Beijing Opera Playgroup

October 15th, 2011

This was BUCCF’s first ever Dumpling playgroup, so it was excitingand nerve racking at the same time. As the families arrived, we invited thechildren to enjoy Chinese sponge cake with milk while coloring activity sheetswaiting for everyone to arrive. Then we proceeded to explain the culturalphenomenon of Beijing Opera, and the tale of “The Monkey King” in a puppet showfeaturing a popular classic Chinese supernatural, cunning monkey children’scharacter. After this performance, the Children proceeded to make their veryown Beijing Opera headdresses and masks to take home and show off their ownacting skills!

Traveling around China

October 29th, 2011

Families started off the journey at the Customs desk, where thechildren decorated their passports and treat bags. After a short "NameYour Favorite Animal" ice breaker, we headed to Xi’an to craft Terracotta Army soldiers out of clay. Then the childrentraveled to Beijing, China's capital, where they builtmodels of the Great Wall of China,and navigated their way through a tricky maze in the Forbidden City. Moving back southwest to Sichuan, the children created panda bears inthe form of puppets and plush toys. There, we said our goodbyes, and thechildren returned home to America with goodie bags loaded with Chinese sweetsand a passport full of stamps, one for each eventful stop in China!

Chinese Games

November 12th, 2011

For this playgroup, the children were able to utilize all oftheir energy playing traditional Chinese games along with the playgroupcoordinators and volunteers. The playgroup started off with making and playing Jianzi (毽子Chinese Shuttlecock). Thisproceeded into watching a Chinese Yo-Yo performance by our award winning guestperformer Brian Chin, and the children practicing a few of their own Yo-Yotricks. This fun playgroup ended with playing many rounds of Finding Friends (a Chinese version of Duck, Duck,Goose).

Chinese Songs and Dumplings

November 19th, 2011

In the last playgroup of the semester, the children and theirfamilies wrapped their very own Chinese Dumplings from pork and dumpling shells.After the wrapping, the families proceeded to bring their creations to theKitchen, where a few volunteers showed their cooking showmanship for the crowd.While waiting for the dumplings to be cooked to perfection, volunteers lead thechildren in Chinese song and dance in the main activity room. Finally towardsthe end, The children and parents were able to feast on their creations andtake a few home!

Thank you so much for coming to our playgroups this semester! We had lots offun holding the playgroups, and it's been an awesome experience forus because of all of you. You and your children's smiles were our motivationand inspiration. :)

Hub on Wheels 9.25.11

This past Sunday was BUCCF’s second time volunteering at the Hubs on Wheels event in City Hall. Volunteers woke up at 5am to help out with registration and cheered on Bostonians as they biked through Downtown Crossing, Dorchester and South Boston. Thanks to all the dedicated China Care Fund members who woke up early Sunday morning to help out. It was a wonderful opportunity for our club to bond and raise a little money in the process.

2nd Annual So You Think BU Can Dance Event Recap

On Saturday, October 15th 2011, Boston University’s China Care Fund (BUCCF) hosted its second annual “So You Think BU Can Dance” event. The show is an energy filled competition where audience members vote on their favorite BU dance group. This year there was an amazing line-up which included six Boston University (BU) student dance groups and a special exhibition performance by Phunk Phenomenon.

Around 100 dancers performed varying dance styles from hip hop, stepping to cultural performances for over 200 audience members. In the end, the audience voted for BU Jalwa to take home the title as this year’s champions by showcasing their Indian culture with a mix of hip hop. For the closely contested runner-up title, the girls of BU Vibes brought a powerful theatrical and urban energy to the stage. BU Fusion, X-ception, Dancers Anonymous, and Bulletproof Funk all brought fierce performances to top off an amazing night.

BUCCF would like express our appreciation and thank all the audience members, dancers, staff and club members for making this show possible and supporting China Care’s cause. We are glad to have raised over $2100 from the show’s proceeds to fund life changing surgeries through the China Care Foundation.

BUCCF making Dragons at the 26th Annual Oak Street Fair

    This past weekend, The Boston University China Care Fund (BUCCF) hosted a craft table at the 26th Annual Oak Street Fair in Boston’s Chinatown. The Oak Street Fair is a wonderful event full of free family friendly activities, entertainment and food that brings together the Greater Boston Chinese community. The event was hosted by the Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center and sponsored by many companies and organizations, along with Platinium Sponsors State Street and Tufts Medical Center. Community groups such as Jumpstart, the YMCA, and the Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center Programs held informational tables to attract people to the great programs that they offer to support the community’s residents. Performances occurred throughout the event such as a lion dance group, dance performances, and a magic act . Kids enjoyed crafts, balloon animals, SnoKones, pony rides, inflatable obstacle courses, and pictures with animals brought by The Creature Teachers and New England Aquarium.
    Our BUCCF group hosted a craft table creating paper Dragons to introduce the community to our upcoming Dumpling’s Playgroup. Our playgroups will introduce adopted Chinese children to their culture and give their families a way to connect and network. Our members really enjoyed assisting the children making dragons as well as meeting and speaking to parents, teachers, and community group leaders about enriching the lives of Chinese orphans. Welcome to BU to the Class of 2015 and Welcome Back to BU Students!

Welcome to BU (or welcome back returning students)! The beginning of the fall semester and college life is always an exciting time bustling with activity. It can also be an overwhelming time with seemingly endless opportunities, and not enough time in your schedule to do it all. As someone who has expressed interest in our club, here is a quick overview of what we are about.

What is BUCCF?
Boston University’s China Care Fund (BUCCF) is a student run club that supports the international non-profit organization called China Care Foundation. We encourage new members to join us in our mission to provide medical and educational support to orphans in China. We hope that you participate by joining our program as a volunteer or helping us in planning our annual shows.

Why you should join?
We pride ourselves as a group where it is easy to get involved and value quality work over seniority. We strive to be innovative and turn every member’s ideas into a reality. For example, our brand new Dumplings Program is an idea created in March that we will be piloting in September. We hope to foster friendship and create an environment that is fun and enjoyable for all members. Our commitment to fun, innovation, and quality work has won us the 2011 Outstanding Leadership Club Award from our National non profit organization.

What do we do?
This upcoming year, BUCCF will begin a Dumplings Playgroup Program in partnership with the Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center. “Dumplings” will allow BU students to mentor, teach, and play with children adopted from China so they can explore the Chinese culture. On October 15th, we will be hosting a charity dance show featuring Phunk Phenomenon, with all proceeds funding medical surgeries. We need a lot of help in making these a success. We also create a number of social events in order for our members to get to know each other and bond. Past events we had in Spring 2011: a Ski Trip in NH, Hot-Pot in Chinatown,Walk for Hunger (where we raised over $300 to alleviate hunger in MA), and group dinners at various Boston restaurants.

Hope Show 2011 Recap

This past year, the 6th annual HOPE Show featured 18 talented performers and student groups. The diverse acts included hip hop dancers, an operatic performance, a traditional Vietnamese dance, a Chinese yo-yo act and many more. The successful show brought in over 300 audience members as well as raised awareness for our cause at BU.

The show raised over $2,000, all of which was donated to a little boy in the China Care home who suffered from Spina bifida. The unfortunate medical condition is a birth defect in which the spinal cord does not develop completely. In this case the membranes that protect the spinal cord push through the opening left by the incomplete tissue and forms a sac. Without treatment the chances of an infection occurring from a ruptured sac is extremely high. All of the proceeds from the HOPE Show was donated to cover his medical costs which will include pre-and post-operative care and round-the-clock nurture he needs to recover.

BUCCF is excited to continue our efforts in providing aid to the orphans of China Care as well as fostering relations within the Greater Boston community. We are already in the process of planning our fall show, So You Think BU Can Dance, which was incredibly successful in 2010.

Hope Show auditions

We will be holding auditions for the Hope Show, which will be held at the Tsai Performance Center in February '10. Proceeds from the show will be donated to China Care Foundation.

All kinds of acts are welcome so please come if you enjoy performing or tell anyone you think would be interested! Just send us an email with what time you'd like to come audition. If the times listed on the flyer aren't convenient, email us to set up another time :)
